the Eagle E-Type low drag GT

When it comes to classic cars (specifically the Jaguar E-Type), we believe that leaving them untouched is almost always the best route. I mean could the British beauty really get any better looking than in its showroom form? To our surprise though, the Eagle E-Type Low Drag GT is a customized coupe based on the iconic E-Type that is drop dead gorgeous.

Eagle took 25 years to build this beauty, and boy did it pay off. The vehicle has been updated and outfitted with plenty of modern day technology and practicality including an increased cabin size, recirculating AC, long range fuel cell, aluminum construction, wider wheel track, increased luggage space, and a whole lot more. Now for the fun stuff. The Grand Tourer-bespoke is equipped with a 4.7 liter aluminum inline-six putting down 346 horsepower, and helping the 5-speed Jag sprint to 60 mph in just 5 seconds, with a top speed of 170 miles per hour. Although the design team revamped this thing from head to toe, the Eagle E-Type Low Drag GT still maintains all of the classic characters we loved so much from the Jaguar E-Type. Unfortunately this work of art is reserved for the rich, carrying a price tag of $1,050,000.

Leap Motion touch-free controller

A tiny device with a huge idea. Imagine if you could do things on your computer just like you do them in real life. If natural movements replaced all those clicks and taps and drags and drops. Imagine if technology finally figured out people, instead of the other way around. That’s the Leap Motion Controller. It senses your hands and fingers and follows their every move. It lets them move in all that wide-open space between you and your computer. So you can do everything without touching anything. It’s the tiny device that will change the way you use technology. It’s the world’s most natural technology that just might change the world.

Shaking the tech scene the same way touch screen technology did all those years ago, Leap Motion technology promises a more “magical experience” for users when their touch free navigation controller hits shelves later this summer. Touchscreen devices are great and all, but sticky fingers leave behind dirt, grime, and those hard to clean streaks across the screen of your device. Leap Motion offers a new touch free solution for both PC and Mac users, allowing users to simply wave their hand and lift their fingers to control their device. From the looks of the video, the actual movements are similar to those you would normally make on a touchscreen device, but without ever actually having to touch the screen. [1]

As the company claims, the Leap Motion Controller tracks all 10 fingers up to 1/100th of a millimeter. It’s up to 200 times more sensitive than existing motion-control technology. That’s how you can draw or paint mini masterpieces inside a one-inch cube. It’s a super-wide 150° field of view and a Z-axis for depth. That means you can move your hands in 3D, just like you do in the real world. With Leap Motion apps, you can reach out and grab objects. Move them around. Even change your perspective. The Leap Motion Controller knows the difference between your fingers. It can tell an index from a pinky from a thumb and when you switch between them. It even understands when you bend, flip, or fold your hands. The Leap Motion Controller will change the way you work without changing what already works for you. So it doesn’t replace your keyboard, mouse, stylus, or trackpad. It works with them, and without special adapters. Just plug it into the USB on your Mac or PC, and you’re off.

littleBits : creativity that works

littleBits are color-coded “bits” that snap together magnetically to make it easy for children and adults to build simple circuits and inventive projects in seconds ; from flickering lanterns to piggy banks to light-sensitive cars. Founded by MIT graduate and TED Senior Fellow Ayah Bdeir, littleBits wants to make learning about electronics more fun and accessible to spark the world’s next generation of inventors. The growing community of Bitsters ranges from designers, artists and museums to parents, schools and after-school programs.

littleBits is an opensource library of electronic modules that snap together with tiny magnets for prototyping, learning, and fun. littleBits consists of tiny circuit-boards with specific functions engineered to snap together with magnets. No soldering, no wiring, no programming, just snap together for prototyping, learning and fun. Each bit has a specific function (light, sound, sensors, buttons, thresholds, pulse, motors, etc), and modules snap to make larger circuits. Just as lego allows you to create complex structures with very little engineering knowledge, littleBits are small, simple, intuitive, blocks that make creating with sophisticated electronics a matter of snapping small magnets together.

When you order a kit online, the shimmering purple box that arrives will look more like a box of chocolates than circuitry. That’s part of the fun: dissolving the aura of inaccessibility that surrounds engineering. Inside, neon-colored Bits range from USB power sources to solar panels to sound sensors. The sets are designed to get people making right away. Anything. A light-up Halloween costume, say, or a remote control car, or a blender. In place of step-by-step guides or goals, the company has an online community of LittleBits owners who upload videos of their creations and troubleshoot what they’re working on. The bits themselves can be bought in sets, but you can also buy individual bits to suit your interests, and suggest new bits for the company’s ever-growing offerings. Since it’s an open-source project, you could also just download the circuit diagrams from GitHub and make the bits yourself. [1]

Designer Toys

Designer toys, also referred to as art toys, plastic designer figurines, urban vinyl figures, amongst many other names, are static (with movable parts or removable parts, or not) figures, predominately from some form of plastic that aim to please your sight, show some attitude, or boost your ego (when you are a collector). Designer toys first appeared in the 1990s with the proliferation of plastics in the toy industry, as newer, more advanced materials became cheaper and more available to the independent designers, to mold and experiment in new forms and project their creativity.

Designer toys mainly are toys and other collectibles produced in limited editions (as few as 10 or as many as 2000 pieces) and created by artists and designers. Designer toys are made of variety of materials; ABS plastic and vinyl are most common, although wood, metal, and resin are occasionally used. The term also encompasses plush, cloth and latex dolls. Creators of designer toys usually have backgrounds in graphic design, illustration or self-described low brow art; some are classically trained in art and design, while others are self-taught. [1]

The concept of urban vinyl was pioneered by an artist named Michael Lau, who first created urban vinyl figures in Hong Kong in the late 1990s.  Other artists who started creating urban vinyl figures included Japanese artist/designer Takashi Murakami, Australian designer Nathan Jurevicius (Scarygirl), Los Angeles based Craig Anthony Perkins (Broken Heart Robot), and former graffiti artist KAWS. An urban vinyl toy is made of soft vinyl that is hollow on the inside like a rubber duck.  Soft vinyl figures are made of soft PVC which are produced by a process called rotocasting or centrifugal casting. These toys are essentially a medium where art is exhibited as a toy in limited editions. Artists use this kind of collectible toy as a platform to make their art more affordable. In stead of paying $20,000 for an original Pop Surrealism/Lowbrow Art painting, why not just pay $50-$100 for a limited edition toy and add that piece to your ART collection ? [2]

Qee (pronounced "key") are a collection of designer toys created by Hong Kong-based company Toy2R, which was founded by Raymond Choy in 1995. Qee figures vary in their design. The original Qee has a body that resembles an extremely simplified human form, somewhat similar in appearance to Playmobil or LEGO figures, though distinctively round and squat.

A Dunny is a type of vinyl designer toy created by Paul Budnitz and Tristan Eaton, and produced by Kidrobot from 2004. The toy is based on a rabbit figure with distinctive tubular ears. The origin of the name Dunny came from a combination of street slang and one of the early "Devil Bunny" prototypes.

From Kidrobot also came Munny. A Munny is a figure made out of vinyl with movable joints. The figures are sold blank and the owner can decorate them using pens, pencils, markers, paint, and other supplies. Alternatively, many people commission artists to design Munnys for them, or artists design them to sell.

The Designer Toy Awards (DTAs) is the leading award honoring excellence and innovation in the Designer Toy community. Established in 2011, the DTAs are presented by the Clutter Media Group — a leading informational organization within Designer Toys, an industry that after more than a decade has become a prominent and legitimate form of artistic and commercial expression as well as a leader in global trendsetting. Each year, the DTAs bring together the Designer Toy community all over the world.

There are various books out there that try to collate all different figures and toys created over the years, by the so many designers and artists. Two are my favorites : "Dot Dot Dash!: Designer Toys, Action Figures and Characters" from Robert Klanten and Matthias Hubner, and "I am Plastic" (vol.1&2) by Paul Budnitz. Check out also ARTOYZ, a french company dedicated to sell, promote and produce Designer Toys and Urban Vinyl Figures. The company based in Paris was founded in December 2003 and started as a website (still growing as from today) including a retail webshop, a magazine featuring news, articles, interviews, a message board, and a news blog.

vintage edition Scrabble

Scrabble may be a household name in 2013, but the popular board game had humble beginnings when architect Alfred M. Butts lost his job during the Great Depression in the 1930s, and decided to create it. At that time however, it was not known as Scrabble. In fact it wasn’t until Butts teamed up with James Brunot in 1948 until the game went from called things like Lexico and Criss Cross Words to the more simple, easy to remember Scrabble.

The game has of course gone to become a fan favorite over the decades, and to celebrate over 100 million games being sold Restoration Hardware has introduced this beautifully crafted Vintage Edition Scrabble. The board game has been completely re-imagined as it may have been in its early days. Game cabinet is crafted of solid hardwood and features die cast metal accents, including the drawer pull and tile racks. You can find it here.

Harrington "children's" cars

This is a very interesting company. Harrington is a British owned and managed company with head quarters in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), in Viet Nam. Their operations however cater for the world's classic cars enthusiasts with strong presence in UK, USA, Canada and Holland. They build parts for classic cars as well as restore selected models. They also produce half sized classic cars for kids, surely the best way to instill passion to the next generation by letting kids experience the joys of motoring first hand. Well not exactly kids only. You see, the model classic cars that they build can actually fit you. According to their spec, by fitting them with an adjustable pedal box, practically anybody can fit in these including 6ft+ tall adults.

Also, hydraulic Disk brakes front and rear, the adjustable pedal box (as mentioned before), fully operational bonnet and boot (hood and trunk). Troubadour reclaimed wood headphones

The unique wooden chambers are a huge contributor to the warm and natural sound of LSTN headphones. They produce more resonance than plastic or metal. LSTN is also environmentally friendly, since they aren't out chopping down trees to create products. The wood used for the headphones is recycled (reclaimed exotic leftover scrap woods from furniture makers that would have been thrown in a landfill). All of the wood is legally harvested through licenses with local government. The wood used in the headphones is never dyed. What you get is its natural color. Available in ebony, cherry and beech.

LSTN Headphones harness the acoustic properties of wood to create sounds as pure as those that come straight from a guitar, piano or violin. Each pair is individually handcrafted from reclaimed wood, and best of all, for every pair of LSTN Headphones sold, the company will donate proceeds from the purchase to one of their charity partners for the deaf ; meaning one child with hearing loss receives medical attention and a custom fit hearing aid on your behalf.

new lego X-WING starfighter

Well, I guess you all know LEGO. In case you don’t, Legos began in the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen (7 April 1891 – 11 March 1958), a carpenter from Billund, Denmark, who began making wooden toys in 1932. In 1934, his company came to be called "Lego", from the Danish phrase leg godt, which means "play”. Lego, consists of colorful interlocking plastic bricks and an accompanying array of gears, minifigures and various other parts. Lego bricks can be assembled and connected in many ways, to construct such objects as vehicles, buildings, and even working robots. Anything constructed can then be taken apart again, and the pieces used to make other objects. Lego began manufacturing interlocking toy bricks in 1949, since which a global Lego subculture has developed, supporting movies, games, competitions, and six themed amusement parks.

Case in point, the company has revealed that a new Star Wars X-wing starfighter set will be coming out in May. Rejoice ! The set, officially coded 10240 and titled “Red Five X-wing Starfighter”, will be available for approximately 200USD, or 200EUR. It does include over 1500 tiny plastic pieces after all, and licensing the Star Wars name and other trademarks isn't cheap.
